Mackay Golf Club – Cyclone Debbie UPDATE
Just an update on how we faired in the aftermath of Cyclone Debbie.
The golf course was closed for two weeks following the cyclone because of the state of the course and the fact that we had no power. We have lost in the vicinity of 80 trees from around the course which is really not that noticeable. The club house only had minor ceiling damage due to the amount of water we had over the period, this has been fixed. We did loose power for 5 days which resulted in the loss of all of the food in our fridges and freezer for the café. As of Saturday 8th April we were back in operation thanks to the tireless efforts of the green staff and the volunteers who come along to help with the massive clean-up operation that took place over a week with over 1200 man hours of volunteer labour put in by our members. The course is coming back up to standard quickly and will be in great condition for the GNQ Open in May. Greens and bunkers suffered during the event but are recovering well. There is still a fair bit of work to do on the bunker to get them back and I am sure this will be completed by the Open.
