2015 Fulton Hogan Townsville Junior Open

During the Easter school holidays kids from all over North Queensland enjoyed the hospitality of the Townsville Golf Club in hosting the Junior Open for 2015.

Children from ages 5 to 17 attended the wonderful morning of golf comprising of 4 different golfing categories for boys and girls. Parents were not left out, with heaps to do in the area of encouraging and growing the next generation of champions.

With the first tee off at 7:30, players and parents were greeted with a breakfast BBQ, cold refreshments and freshly brewed coffee.

The 17 and under girls started the day with their 18 hole championship followed keenly by the 17 and under boys. After a close battle and a few complex rule decisions, the girl and boy champions were decided, Emily Cannavan for the girls shot 79 and Ryan Thomas for the boys with 76. Both championships were decided by a single shot to Koralie Key and Sam Spelta respectively.

Meanwhile on the 1st tee the younger golfers battled out the 9 hole competition. Playing the more difficult  front 9 holes of the course, the younger guns played excellent golf and made new friends over the 3 hour experience. The older boys’ winner was Dylan Nott with 52 shots. The younger boys winner was Jack Hunter, 46 shots and the younger girls winner was Tahnee Marshall 57 shots.

Sixteen young beginners, played an exciting 6 hole 2ball Ambrose event on the shortened back nine holes, with only 8 shots between first and eighth place. All the kids had a marvellous time sharing ideas on how to play golf. Their decision making skills on shot selection was incredible for such young players. The eventual winners were Morgan Hurlock and Alvic Harris with 30 strokes.

An important fundamental to enjoying golf is to have fun and our tiniest of players did exactly that with the 6 hole SNAG competition. Using enlarged plastic golf equipment, tennis balls and Velcro sticky flagsticks the kids played excitedly over the impromptu course on the 10th hole. The laughter and enjoyment could be easily heard in the nearby clubhouse. With a total of 26, Ebony Paul took out the competition by only a single shot, as proud parents stood by with big smiles on their faces.

After all the battles on the golf course has finished, the trophy presentations took place upstairs in the members’ clubhouse. Many parents commented positively on the amount of prizes being made available to the kids. Lots of memories were being captured also by proud parents of their champions of the day.

Such a golfing event couldn’t be possible without the support of sponsors. A big thank you to our major sponsor Fulton Hogan. The support from these guys was incredible.
